A1 Level International ESOL Diploma in Speaking and Listening
City & Guilds is pleased to announce the launch of a new test, IESOL Diploma in Speaking and Listening at A1 level, to support the spouse and partner visa applications under the immigration system operated by the UK Border Agency (UKBA).
The new qualification tests speaking and listening skills, in line with the UKBA visa requirements for the spouse and partner visa applications, and has been added to the list of UKBA approved English language tests.
The examination is made up of two parts: speaking (which is the ISESOL exam at A1 level) and listening (which is the listening component of the IESOL exam at A1 level).
Given the shorter nature of the examination, the length of the test has been reduced to 20 minutes. Apart from easier administration for the centres, it also means that candidates wishing to apply visa the spouse/partner visa application route do not need to be tested in areas which are not required by the UKBA.
Registrations will open in Walled Garden on 29 February 2012.

A1 IESOL Diploma – Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Will the International ESOL (IESOL) Diploma at A1 level (9992-71) continue to be accepted by the UKBA for spouse/partner visa applications purposes?
A: Yes. The new test only offers another, quicker way for partner/spouse visa applicants to demonstrate their English language ability. The recognition of the A1 level IESOL Diploma by UKBA is unchanged.
Q: Are the skills tested in the new qualification different from those assessed in the speaking and listening sections of the existing IESOL Diploma at A1 level?
A: No. The speaking and listening skills in the new qualifications are tested in the same way as under the A1 level IESOL Diploma.
In fact, the speaking element of the new qualification is the A1 level ISESOL examination (8985-71), which is also available as a stand-alone speaking test.
Q: Who are the primary target audience for the new qualification?
A: This new qualification can be useful for a wide range of learners wishing to prove their English language skills in speaking and listening, but it is mainly targeted at non-native speakers of English who need to demonstrate their English language skills as part of the UKBA spouse/partner visa application process.
Q: What documents are required by UKBA?
A: Please refer to the revised list of approved English language test, published by UKBA, for a list of the required documentation that need to be included in the visa applications:
